Infant Health Management

Children go through rapid physical development during infancy and can easily contract diseases due to a significant drop in the immunity acquired from their mother. Infants can obtain healthcare and essential vaccinations for free at public health centers.

01Stages of Infant Development

Useful Information
Childcare conflict

In raising a child, you may experience conflict with family members due to differences in opinions on childrearing. These conflicts are common between parents-in-law and young couples. Talk through the conflict with your parents-in-law.

Examples of conflicts
  • Feed when the child is hungry. ↔ Feed at regular times.
  • Feed a lot, even if the child becomes chubby. ↔ Always feed the correct amount.
  • Carry child on your back if he or she cries. ↔ Carrying the child on your back turns into a bad habit.
  • Feeding cold milk makes the stomach stronger. ↔ Cold food irritates the stomach.

02Vaccinations

Vaccinations protect your baby from communicable diseases by developing the baby's immunity.

(1)Precautions before Vaccination

  • On days when the child's health is good, a parent who is closely familiar with the child's health should take the child to receive the vaccination.
  • Give your child a bath, and put him or her in clean clothes before visiting the doctor.
  • Check for designated vaccination medical institutes and get vaccinations at a nearby medical institution.
  • It is advisable to make an appointment in advance so as to avoid congested hours and not wait long.
  • Drink plenty of water while waiting and relax.
  • Inform the service person of present symptoms or chronic conditions, if any, at the time of preliminary examination.
  • Make sure vaccinations are received before noon, so that it is easier to return to the hospital if there are any complications.
  • Present your vaccination diary to check and manage the child’s vaccination records.

(2)Precautions after Vaccination

  • After vaccination, any adverse reactions at the vaccination center should be observed for 20 to 30 minutes before returning home.
  • Have your child rest on the day of the vaccination, and observe its state closely for two to three days after the vaccination.
  • There may be slight symptoms such as pain around the vaccinated area, red swelling, edema or muscle pain, fever, nausea, etc. However, most symptoms will improve in one or two days.
  • If there is a high fever, difficulty in breathing, rashes, severe dizziness, etc., see a doctor immediately.
    • If the child keeps fretting, does not eat, or seems different from usual, see a doctor.
  • Keep the vaccinated area clean

03National Vaccination Support for Children

To increase the immunization rates and establish a foundation for the eradication of vaccinated infectious diseases, the government supports the entire cost (vaccination fee and implementation cost) for 17 types of vaccination to children under the age of 12 years.

(1)National Vaccination Support Program for Children

Provided are full support for the vaccination cost of 18 types of vaccines for children under 12 years old, resulting in improved vaccination rates and public safety from infectious diseases subject to vaccination.

  • Free vaccination centers: Public healthcare centers and designated healthcare organizations
    People issued a resident registration number or alien registration number (including exempt people) can get vaccinated for free at a public health center or nearby designated medical institution. Foreign nationals who have stayed in Korea for more than 3 months and have not registered as aliens can receive free vaccinations at public health centers and designated medical institutions if they (or with a guardian) visit the local public health center with valid identification (passport, etc.) and receive a temporary vaccination number.
    • Designated medical institutions can be checked on the vaccination assistant website (https://nip.kdca.go.kr).

  • DTaP, IPV, and Hib vaccines can be administered as DTaP-IPV or DTaP-IPV/Hib combination vaccine depending on the vaccination schedule.
  • 1) National vaccination drive: Through recommended mandatory vaccinations, the country determines the infectious diseases subject to vaccination and vaccination implementation standards and methods through the「Act on Prevention and Management of Infectious Diseases」) and provides financial resources and support based on this.
    2) Other Vaccinations: Charged vaccination for infectious diseases other than those in national vaccination program or designated infectious diseases, can be vaccinated at private medical organizations

  • Vaccination history
    The vaccination assistant website (https://nip.kdca.go.kr) provides various information related to vaccination, and enables you to check your child's vaccination history*.
    • After registering as a member of the vaccination assistant website, you need to register your child’s information.
    • Log in to the vaccination assistant website → Vaccination management → Child vaccination management → Register child's information → Check child's vaccination history
  • Free issuance of vaccination certificate
    You can obtain (print) a vaccination certificate (Korean & English) from the vaccination assistant website.
    • An authentication certificate is required for issuance of a vaccination certificate
  • Vaccination Notification Text Messaging Service
    This service is provided to help recipients manage their next vaccination schedule without losing track of it. With your consent to receive text messages on your mobile phone when filling out the vaccination schedule, you can receive advance notification and missed vaccination text messages based on the vaccination schedule. To receive a text message service in multiple languages, you must request the desired language from the public health center or vaccination facility. In this case, you can additionally register a mobile phone number to receive text messages in that language.
    • If you do not add a mobile phone number to which multilingual text service will be directed, it will be sent to the existing registered number.
    • Multi-language service (12 languages): Nepali, Lao, Russian, Mongolian, Vietnamese, English, Uzbek, Japanese, Chinese, Cambodian, Thai, Filipino

(2)Project to Prevent Newborn Babies from Having Hepatitis B in the Perinatal Period

This project fully supports the cost of antigen and antibody tests conducted to confirm the necessary preventive measures and results in preventing perinatal hepatitis B infection* in newborns born to mothers with hepatitis B.

  • Perinatal infection: Transmitted from mother to child during the period before and after childbirth (29 weeks of pregnancy to 1 week after birth)
Eligibility and Application
  • Eligibility: newborns of mothers positive for Hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) or Hepatitis Be-antigen (HbeAg)
  • The recipient submits test results of Hepatitis B and the agreement for personal information collection to the medical institution participating
    • When you fill out the agreement for personal information collection and request for message service, you can receive text messages for Hepatitis B vaccination and schedule
Support details
①Immunoglobulin, ②Hepatitis B vaccination, and ③Support for antigen/antibody quantitative testing costs
  • After basic hepatitis B vaccination (1st to 3rd), re-vaccination (up to 3 times) and re-test (up to 2 times) are supported depending on the results of the first antigen/antibody test.
Preventive Treatment Schedule
  • (Immediately after birth (within 12 hours)) Primary vaccination with immune globulin and hepatitis B
    • Premature infants born with a birth weight of less than 2kg require basic vaccination a total of 4 times (up to 1, 2, 6 months).
  • (1 month old) Hepatitis B 2nd vaccination
  • (6 months old) Hepatitis B 3rd vaccination
  • (9-15 months old) Hepatitis B antigen & antibody first quantitative test
    • Re-vaccination and re-test are carried out according to the test results.

(3)Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection national vaccination support project

Vaccination against human papillomavirus (HPV) infection can prevent cervical cancer, anogenital cancer, and head and neck cancer, which are primarily attributed to HPV infection*.
To avail the maximum effect of the HPV vaccine, it is essentiat to complete the vaccination before sexual contact, which is the primary cause of HPV infection.
Available are professional health counseling and HPV vaccination services to 12-year-old female adolescents, who are in a transitional stage in life when they undergo major physical and emotional changes, to help them grow into healthy women.

  • 90% of cervical cancers and 70% of anogenital and oropharyngeal cancers are attributed to HPV infection.
Target group for support
  • Female adolescents aged 12 to 17
  • Women aged 18 to 26 (support based on income criteria*)
    • According to the National Basic Livelihood Security Act, recipients of basic welfare income and the next lower class (50% or less of standard median income)
Support information
  • (Common) Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection vaccination 2 to 3 times
    • The number of vaccinations varies based on the age of first vaccination: (up to 14 years old) 2 times, (at least 15 years old) 3 times
  • (12 years old) Provide health counseling related to pubertal growth & development and menarche

(4) National influenza vaccination support project

To improve the influenza vaccination rate and reduce the disease burden for senior citizens, pregnant women, and children, who constitute high-risk groups with high complications from influenza infection, the costs of vaccination are fully supported.

Eligible for support :
Children aged 6 months to 13 years old
Support details :
1 influenza vaccination jab
  • If a child under 9 years old is receiving the influenza vaccine for the first time, 2 shot doses are administered at least 4 weeks apart.
