Guide to Personal Information Protection

(1)Definition of personal information

Personal information, which is information about a living individual, allows for a specific person to be identified through its use or in association with other information, such as name, resident registration No., passport No., and alien registration No.

(2)Types and definition of personal information

  1. 1 Personal information
    • General information: Name, resident registration No., address, contact info., date and/or place of birth, gender, etc.
    • Family information: Family relationship and family member info., etc.
  2. 2 Physical information
    • Physical information: Facial features, iris, voice, genetic information, fingerprint, height, weight, etc.
    • Medical/Health information: Physical examination info. such as health status, medical records, physical disability, disability level, medical history, blood type, IQ, drug test, etc.
  3. 3 Mental information
    Ideology, religion, values, political party/union membership and activity history, etc.
  4. 4 Social information
    Educational background, academic grades, school life record, military service status, military number and rank, type of military discharge, duty unit, job position, employer, workplace, job evaluation record, criminal record, court trial record, imposed fine history, etc.
  5. 5 Financial information
    Salary amount, interest income, business income, credit card No., account No., credit evaluation info., home ownership, land ownership, personal vehicle, store and building, etc.

(3)Measures for Personal Information Protection

  1. 1Make your passwords difficult for others to guess and change them regularly
    • Set your passwords as eight letters or longer with a combination of letters, numbers, special symbols, etc. in three or more digits when registering as a member.
    • Change your passwords regularly, at least once every three months, and avoid using the same password in different websites.
  2. 2Do not provide your information to others or post them on your SNS
    • Be cautious not to disclose your personal information such as ID, password, resident registration number, etc., or disclose them to your friends or others.
    • Do not make too much of your information public such as contact number, location, address, etc. on your SNS.
    • If you need to provide personal information for purposes such as member registration, receiving gifts, etc., read the clauses such as personal information collection, personal information process, period for retaining the information, purposes, etc.
  3. 3Do not click the Internet address (URL) on text messages or e-mails from an unreliable source
    • Personal information can be extracted through programs attached to a text message or email and used in crimes. If you receive a text message or an email from a suspicious or unreliable source, do not download the attached file or click the URL.
    • Do not check suspicious text messages or emails, and rather delete them immediately.
  4. 4Take particular caution about disclosing personal information in financial transactions
    • Financial damages can occur by hacking online banking accounts, authentication certificates, etc. while making financial transactions. Take particular care while providing and using finance related personal information.
    • If you need to save financial information such as credit card numbers, etc. while making financial transactions, set a password and do not use public computers such as in an Internet cafe.
  5. 5 Check the basic details to protect the personal information of your children
    Under Korean law, personal information of children under the age of 14 can only be collected with the consent of their legal representative(guardian). The guardian must clearly confirm the content of the service that requires a child's personal information to be provided, and the scope of use of personal information.
