Health Checkups

01General Checkup

Implemented for the purpose of early detection of cardiovascular diseases, such as high blood pressure & diabetes, and improvement of lifestyle habits for.

  • (eligibility & interval) employment subscribers, local subscribers who are the head of a household, local household members aged at least 20 years old, and their dependents.
    (Two-year interval, however, for non-office workers among employment subscribers, it is undertaken annually)
    • Medical aid beneficiaries: persons aged between 20 to 64 (over aged 66 will get medical care lifetime transition period)
  • Checkup items: common items and items per gender/age
  • (Common items) examination and counseling, physical measurement, vision/hearing test, chest X-ray, blood test, urine test, oral checkup
  • (Items by gender & age) Eligible gender and age vary for each checkup/exam item related to dyslipidemia, hepatitis B antigen/antibody, bone density, cognitive dysfunction, mental health, lifestyle habit evaluation, elderly physical function, and dental plague checkup.
    • (Confirmatory checkup/exam) Those who are suspected of having high blood pressure, diabetes, or pulmonary tuberculosis as a result of a health checkup can be examined and tested at a nearby hospital or clinic without any out-of-pocket costs until the end of January of the following year (Confirmatory checkups/exams for high blood pressure & diabetes are excluded at general hospitals & tertiary general hospitals).

02Cancer Checkup

Screening for the six most common cancers in Korea that can be treated if detected early

  • Eligibility & interval: Stomach cancer (aged at least 40, 2-year interval), colon cancer (aged at least 50, 1-year interval), breast cancer (aged at least 40, 2-year interval), cervical cancer (aged at least 20, 2-year interval), liver cancer (aged at least 40 in high-risk group, semi-annually), lung cancer (aged 54 until 74 in high-risk group, 2-year interval)
    • Cancer screening is deferred for 5 years for those who have undergone the second stage of colorectal cancer screening (colonoscopy) at the national cancer screening and those who apply for the calculation special cases of six major cancers (Screening is available once a separate application is made.)

03Infant Health Checkup

All necessary examinations for the healthy growth and development of babies along with education for guardians

  • Eligibility: Target age for each instance among infants and toddlers under 6 years old (14 days to under 71 months old)
    • New establishment of health checkup for infants within 14 days of birth~35 days… Executed from Jan. 1, 2021
  • Checkup items: examination, physical measurement, developmental evaluation, counseling, health education, and oral checkup

04Youth Health Checkup Outside School

Provides regular health checkups for students who do not attend school to help them grow healthy

  • Eligible persons: Youths aged 9 to 18 who do not attend school
    • Among students aged 19 who do not attend school, medical checkups can be offered if not overlapping with national health checkups
  • Checkup items: counseling, examination, physical measurement, blood test, and basic checkup and selective checkup such as oral checkup
    • People who are suspected of having high blood pressure, diabetes, heart diseases, dyslipidemia, hepatitis C, or syphilis after a checkup will receive another test for definite diagnosis.

05Health Checkup Period

  • Until December 31 of the current year
  • However, confirmatory checkups/exams and second-stage exams are conducted until January 31 of the following year.
    • Infant checkups are undertaken a total of 8 times (based on age) within the checkup/exam period.
    • Confirmatory checkups/exams for out-of-school youth is until March 31 of the following year.

06Expenses

  • General health checkup, checkup for definite diagnosis, and infant health checkup > no additional cost for patient
  • Youth Health Checkup for Outside School > no additional cost for patient (government subsidy)
  • Cancer screening > 10% out-of-pocket cost (However, there is no out-of-pocket cost for those eligible for cancer screening cost support (national cancer) and recipients of medical benefits, and the NHIS fully covers the cost of cervical and colon cancer screenings.)
Health Checkups Health Checkup Procedure
  • Health checkup of subjects
    • Check whether you are eligible for checkups/exams and the applicable items for the year through the exam chart sent by the NHIS to those eligible for checkups/exams or through the NHIS' website or mobile app (The Health Insurance)
  • Appointment and visiting the health screening agency
    • You can receive a checkup at any designated medical institution/clinic, regardless of your place of residence, and you must bring a valid form of ID to the medical institution/clinic.
  • Notification of the checkup result
    • The screening result will be sent to the examinee by the screening agency
  • It may be difficult to make a reservation for a checkup at the end of the year due to the large number of exam recipients, so please get a checkup in advance.
